Eat Bulaga’s Recycling 101 Project
I’m so impressed what the noontime TV show Eat Bulaga is doing in one segment of their show, it’s the “Juan for All” where the three co-hosts (Jose, Wally and Paolo) visited a barangay or town, choose one lucky homeowner (usually those in the C-D level of the society) and gave them cash, groceries and appliances. Then in cooperation with the community officials, they will collect empty plastic bottles from the whole neighborhood. And those collected plastic bottles will be recycled and made into school chairs and donate them to a chosen school. From what I learned (though not really sure of the exact number) for every 12,000 plastic bottles gathered, one school chair will be produced. The response is over-whelming. As of today they have collected bottles equivalent to 50 chairs, and these chairs were already delivered to the lucky school in the province of Laguna. And this is just the beginning, they promised to continue with this project so more schools will be benefited.
With this endeavor they didn’t only minimize the garbage that end up in earth’s landfills but most of all gave school children comfortable learning environment. Kudos to the management and staffs in coming up with this brilliant idea, for their contribution in saving mother earth and helping school children.
Plastics equals Pollution?
What would be our lives like without plastic, I’m not talking about credit and debit card. It’s the plastic bags being use as packages and containers for different products we usually buy at the supermarkets, department stores, bakeries and wet markets. Because of its durability and cheap price, it replaced the traditional packages such as glass bottle, paper bags and bags made of natural materials like the native “bayong” and baskets.
Though convenient to use, it also became the biggest contributor of waste product in the environment. Floods were commonly blamed on the dumping of plastic garbage that blocked the creeks and flood ways that will divert rain waters into the river and sea, thus causing floods on the streets and low-lying areas.
There was a proposal from one official of a municipality to ban the use of plastics as packages, he is urging his constituents to go back to the traditional native baskets and bayongs when doing their marketing and grocery shopping to minimize the use of plastic bags and its ill-effect to the environment. And to the sellers to use paper bags instead of plastics as wrappers for their merchandise.
But as in any proposition, it gathered varied response from the people. There are those who are sold to the idea and those who are reluctant. There are pros and cons of course for this suggestion, there are also workers and employees’ plights to be considered when manufacturers of plastics closed down, on the other hand it can help lessen the pollution and tragic incidents brought by heavy-flooding and flash floods.
On the lighter note, big malls are now using biodegradable plastic bags and eco-friendly reusable fabric bags even encouraging their customers to go green. It will be a matter of time when all plastic companies will follow suit. I hope the sooner the better.
From Farmville to Farmland
Farmville is very popular among Facebook users, young and old alike, even a small child can learn to plant and harvest different plants and trees. And with this knowledge, a brilliant idea was conceived by the Philippine National Police Los Baños in the province of Laguna. Inviting young students to participate in the tree planting.
So instead of just planting virtual plants and trees in Farmville on their Facebook account, they now experienced of doing it in real life. The kids enjoyed what they have done. This also taught them the importance of having trees not only for the environment but also for the future of the coming generation like them. Let us hope that this will serve as eye-opener to other schools and organizations for them to follow this example, and hopefully the illegal loggers will not destroy this beautiful project for their own illegal activities.
