Pinoy smokers watch out

The government is planning to  increase the present percentage of excise tax on cigarette manufacturers and the tax money collected will be added to the coffers of Department of Health, especially in Philhealth.  The current price for a stick of cigarette is  Php 1 – 2.00, if the new tax increase will be implemented the price will be up to 5 pesos per stick.

What are the effects:

  • For those who can’t afford the new price there are chances of quitting or minimizing their smoking habit that can lead to a healthier, longer natural life.
  • With the additional funds from tax, the government can deliver a better quality of health services to the Filipino people.
  • Less pollution and free from second-hand smoke diseases.
  • Good news for non-smokers and bad news for smokers. :)

I’m not a smoker and also I don’t drink alcoholic beverages but I am in favor of it. For those who smoke check this link to know the chemicals being inhaled during smoking. Hope this would help.

  • Davao City has led the country in protecting its citizens against the ill-effects of smoking when it banned smoking in public places and public utility vehicles. The city saved money when public health improved.

I am all for encouraging people to quit smoking…and immediate cost to one’s wallet might deter many.

Thanks for starting the discussion Josie.

    Best regards,

    Papa Sez

    • Josie:

same here in Manila Papa Sez, schools, hospitals and public offices banned smoking, yes, also public utility vehicles though there are some who are really stubborn, making palusot.. :)

  • Noel:

    • Josie:

salamat Noel, kesa nga sa bisyo gastusin yung pera, sa pagkain at importanteng bagay na lng, sigurado pa na walang mapeperwisyo dahil sa usok at sakit na dala ng paninigarilyo. :)

  • I have begun to realize finally quitting is actually literally impossible. I started smokes when I was in my teens. It had been the most horrible mistake I’ve made. Right now 30 years down the road and I have lung disease. I tested out most of the stop smoking tricks still not one helped me stop. My last hope is definitely the smokeless cigarettes in the end.

  • While attempting to quit smoking, I found the electronic cigarette. The e-cig wotks on a nicotine material that has only nicotine. Absolutely no toxic substances whatsoever. They have fortunetly made all the difference. Stopping breathing cancerous substances feels great to me!

  • Vera:

Dapat lang magmahal na nga ang yosi. But they also need to have a plan about cigarette smugglers otherwise hindi rin masosolve ang problema sa tax collection

  • natatawa ako sa comment ni chie…ehehehe! sana matuloy to…para iwas sakit nang baga…ehehehe!

    • Josie:

fifty-fifty chances baka harangin ng mga politician smokers, pero dahil additional collection for the gov’t baka palusutin, hehehe ang gulo.. :)

  • We all know that production of cigarettes here in the Philippines can’t be stopped. At least, something is being done. I hope eventually it will be abolished, for the greater good of all.. :)

    • Josie:

if not fully stopped at least minimize, but cigarette manufacturers’ employees’ livelihood will also have to be consider..

  • andy:

mabuti naman…parang sa Singapore…5 dollr ung 10 stick nila dati dun…which kept me from buying at that time…effective un!…5 yrs na kong smoke free….!kaso it was a different story na un…

  • elai:

i agree to this. i hope this will push through. marami syang benefits

  • chiewilks:

this is a good reason for me to stop smoking
